My Dreams

My dreams lie before my feet.

They are still alive.

They are on life support.

They fight for air.

They're asking why I abandoned them.

I swear I'm still here. I plead:

There's still time.

How it all aches! It's all my fault.

A dream must be reared. It cannot take flight on its own.

Please don't rot away. Please don't just be dreams. Please be something more.

I know something exists beyond a horizon of promise.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

How did I ever neglect them? I gather them,

One by one, hold them gently in my arms,

Kiss them softly,

And say,

Let's start again.

Again, again, and again.

How many times have I said that?

To my dreams:

Please still believe in me. I still believe in you.

To which they say:

Then teach me how to breathe.
