Have a Bite of Cake

Affections are sought to soothe
But aren’t we tired of that sickly sweet
Like confections, empty gestures
Whose true nature lies in affectation?

There’s a smile full of decay,
A trail of rotten teeth,
And a half-eaten red velvet cake
With frivolities scrawled in white icing.

A knife is taken and the words are smeared,
But it wasn’t like anything you haven’t read before.
It’s thrown in the air with absent ceremony
But at least in its ruin, its nature is shamelessly exposed.

Crumbs and spoils:
That’s all there ever was.
